BGM Charitable Society has been actively working in the area for 27 years, conducting awareness camps and detailed surveys to understand the socio-economic challenges faced by families in the target area. With male members facing limited job opportunities and low family income, the focus has shifted toward empowering women to generate sustainable income during their spare time.
Animal husbandry, particularly cow rearing, aligns well with the country's goals of food security and rural development. Cows can thrive in harsh environments and provide a source of income for small/marginal farmers, landless laborers, and women. Keeping cows not only yields additional income but also ensures a regular source of milk for the family, benefitting children's nutrition and overall health.
BGM distributed milking cows to families with unutilized land, and with proper grass cultivation, one cow can be sustained throughout the year. The average milk yield of 10 liters per day yields a net profit of around Rs 350 per day, providing valuable remuneration for spare time jobs.
The initiative has led to the cultivation of vegetables using organic cow dung, improving family nutrition and generating additional income. The primary objective of the scheme is to make women self-reliant and ensure access to good nutrition and education for their children. Through cow distribution and allied activities, BGM Charitable Society continues to uplift the living conditions of families, promoting self-sufficiency and sustainable development within the community.
Goat rearing offers a simple and cost-effective means of income generation, particularly for women. BGM Charitable Society has identified and propagated the "Malabari Goat," known for its high milk and meat yields as well as strong disease resistance.
Recognizing the potential for better income with less strain, BGM actively promotes goat rearing among groups. Beneficiaries mobilize funds for purchasing goats through banks, and BGM monitors the process through SHGs.
By empowering women through goat distribution, BGM aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities, contributing to their economic independence and overall well-being. The demand for goat milk and meat presents a promising avenue for income generation, making goat rearing a valuable asset in the community's pursuit of financial stability.
